A big move

Some exciting news in the works over here at Tamara Lakeman Photography….

My fiancé (who will be my “husband” in just 8 shorts weeks) and I are relocating to Rossland, BC! Rossland is a small mountain town in the heart of British Columbia’s ‘Kootenay’ region. It is home to Red Mountain Ski Resort and has a bustling winter tourism industry.

For sometime we have wanted to relocate to a smaller, more cozy town. We are drawn to the slower-pace of life, the idea of leaving our home unlocked, the idea of being able to afford our OWN a home, seeing familiar faces at the grocery store, knowing our neighbours names, and all the many other things that ‘Small Town Life’ means.

One thing was holding us back though…. Jobs.

Small Town Life is well and good… but it’s no secret that Small Towns don’t generally have a plethora of well-paying jobs available. My greatest concern was that we would leave the City (where we are established and comfortable) and find ourselves barely getting by in a Small Town. Working pay-check to pay-check at jobs that we hate, for minimum wage. I can’t give up Vancouver for that! No way! So, our dream had to wait. It had to wait until the stars aligned & we would be able to move to the Small Town of our dreams with a great job in our back pocket.

I am happy to report that earlier this year, those stars aligned. My Fiancé accepted a new position with a WONDERFUL, stable employer… and in July of this year that employer will be relocating us to Rossland, BC where we will start a new, exciting, very different chapter of our lives.

What does this mean for Tamara Lakeman Photography?

Well, for one, the MUCH lower cost of living in Rossland will mean that I will finally be able to focus more exclusively on Tamara Lakeman Photography. When we own a home, I may even be able to fulfill my dream of putting in a home-studio! Yes, getting re-established with a new client base will be time consuming… but for once, I will actually HAVE time to spare.

It also means that I will get to service a whole new region of Families & Weddings. My service area will primarily be the South-Eastern Corner of the province, but I will absolutely travel into Alberta & BC’s Okanagan Valley as well. Living in Small Towns means spending more time in your car, and that is something that I am completely okay with.

As for my Vancouver clients– NEVER FEAR! I am securely rooted here in this beautiful City and I have every intention of coming back every couple of months (or more, if my fabulous clients request!) Rossland is a 7 hour drive away. Not exactly do able every single weekend, but certainly do able every 8-10 weeks. Not only do I have a wonderful client base here, but I also have friends and family who are very dear to me. Returning for regular work/play visits will be extremely important.

As always, thank you all for your amazing support and love. I can’t even tell you how thrilled I am to be starting this new chapter.

The L Family: {Vancouver Family & Teen Photography}

The L* family came to me earlier this year looking for Family Portraits. Their 3 girls were growing up way too fast– The oldest, Jasmine, in her first year at UBC.. and The Twins, Annie & Grace in the middle of 10th grade in highschool. Mom and Dad wanted to get some family photos done before they were all grown up and living away from home. A wise move!

From the moment that their Mom contacted me, I was looking forward to this shoot. It’s not every day that I get to work with ‘kids’ who follow instruction so well! We chose Granville Island as our setting for it’s multitude of backdrops and settings. The girls loved the more urban feel, while Mom & Dad appreciated the more natural (trees, water) elements. It’s not often that you find a location which can please everyone– but Granville Island did the trick, as it so often does.

I loved working with this amazing family. Their smiles and laughter came so easy. They were absolute dreams to work with! When I went back to my office that night to work on their images, I found myself smiling along to their beautiful, contagious grins. By the end of the editing process, my facial muscles ACHED with all the smiling.

… And I loved every minute of it!

jack and kate. 4 years later.

4 years ago I photographed Jack & Kate.

At aged 1 & 4, they were strikingly beautiful children. I remember Jack being an absolute dream to work with. Even though he was only 4 years old he was a complete natural in front of the camera; letting me pose him, while making it all look so moody, natural, and genuine. To this day I have never worked with a 4 year old as incredible as he was. Every photographer dreams of shooting a child that gorgeous, and that effortless in front of the lens.

Fast Forward 4 years and I found myself shooting these two incredible kiddos yet again.

Guess what? Jack was just as amazing to work with. And know what else? That busy, crazy, beautiful little girl Kate grew up to a busy, crazy BEAUTIFUL big girl… And she rocked my camera just as hard at her older brother did 4 years before.

God. I love these kids. Check out these rad ‘Then & Now’ shots.

Christina

I had such a wonderful Maternity Session last weekend with Christina– I just couldn’t WAIT to get over here to share the images!

Firstly, it should be mentioned that this shoot was a long time in the works. Christina first got in touch with me regarding working together way back in January, while I was still on my epic 5 week-long Thailand Adventure. Over the next few months we kept in touch, scheduled & then rescheduled a couple shoots (due to schedule conflicts and torrential down-pour!) and then finally ended up making it happen on March 16th.

Christina has a very calm, confident and straight forward personality that resonates & fills the room around her. And no wonder! She owns & operates Silver Icing, an amazing Women’s Clothing Line that specializes in eco-friendly, athletic-inspired clothing for women. When we met, she was in town for a Trade Show and had a rack of the most beautiful, Silver Icing clothing out. Each item was more beautiful than the next!

We started in a hotel room at the beautiful Georgian Court Hotel in downtown Vancouver, then went for a walk together, stopping as we liked for photo ops and lots of chatting. This is a woman who is PASSIONATE about what she does! Her passion & dedication shone brightly as she talked about Silver Icing, her journey to get to where she is today & her goals. As a business owner myself I found her attitude incredibly inspiring and contagious!

It was SUCH a wonderful treat working with Christina and I can’t WAIT to see her again.

Christine

Working with Christine was such a treat. Here is a Momma-to-be who just RADIATED happiness. She had such an easy, genuine smile that was quick to appear & long to linger.

It didn’t take long for us to realize that we had a mutual love of dogs. Christine ran a successful dog-walking business for years before getting pregnant. When she told me about her past furry-clients her face just lit up, and you could tell that she really, truly loved what she did and the creatures that she worked with. I love that in a person! I also love a person who is able to ‘think outside the box’ in their career choices and find a way to make a comfortable living doing something that really just brings a smile to their face.

Plus, (it has to be said) Christine has really amazing hair!

Sunday Mornings.

I had to reschedule a photo shoot yesterday morning due to rain. It was POURING. Pouring as if it knew that I had a Maternity Session scheduled and it just wanted to spite me. I hate postponing for rain, but I hate miserable, uncomfortable, cold, wet mothers-to-be even more. So I rescheduled.

I love this city, and I love what all the rain brings us (trees, lush green grass, a moderate climate) but I have to admit– sometimes I kind of hate all this damn percipitation. I hate the rain so much sometimes that I get to thinking (perhaps unfairly) that I hate Vancouver itself. And I daydream about leaving this place, with a ‘middle finger’ planted firmly on my left hand as I get the hell out of town. Headed for somewhere else. Anywhere else where the sun is shining.

But then the next day the sun comes out, and the sky is the most radiant blue you’ve ever seen. You throw open your french patio doors, and stand there for far too long, your favorite mug of hot coffee in hand. You breathe in that fresh, early spring air, and you think to yourself, “It was worth it.”

if the shoe fits; wear it.

Last week I got to spend one delightful morning with my 2 young nieces. I took them to a ‘Drop in Gym’ at the local community center, stopped by a local chinese bakery for a snack, and then came home for a little play time before their Mom & Dad came to pick them up. It’s such a treat to get to spend one-on-one time with these two little sweet hearts!

Though, I do have a confession….

These girls aren’t quite yet TRULY my nieces. They are the daughters of my best (and longest… 15 years!) friend… but not my true, biological nieces. Not yet, anyway!

You see. I am engaged to my Best Friend’s brother-in-law. It’s a convenient arrangement which has amazingly worked out VERY well for all involved. When I found myself newly single back in 2011, my best friend took me aside and exclaimed in a very excited way that it was good that I was single because “Now I could marry her Single & Available Brother-in-Law!” and “then we would be sisters!”.

I told her to cool her jets…. but that I would go on a date with the guy and see how it went.

And the rest is history. We went on a date. And then another. And then another. And before long I realized that I really LIKED this guy! I’m not sure if my best friend really knew how much of a Match we would truly be, or if she simply wanted to push us together for the convenient potential by-product of our union… But! Whatever her initial intention- it worked. Something ‘clicked’ in a way that nothing has ever ‘clicked’. And now, I am planning a wedding with this fabulous man.

When J & I get married, my Best-Friend-Of-The-Last-15-Years and I will have the same last name. Our children will be cousins. We will be sisters-in-law. And I will TRULY be her two, beautiful daughter’s ‘Aunt’. For real.

Until then, I’ll keep calling myself their ‘Aunt’. Because, as they say, “if the shoe fits; wear it.”

out and about

One of my Photography New Year’s Resolutions was to take more photos.

Not just professionally but PERSONALLY. To carry my camera along with me to document my days, my adventures and my mishaps. I have a terrible, lazy habit of leaving my camera behind because it’s “too heavy”, or because “I don’t feel like babysitting it all day long”. In doing so I am not only missing out on some awesome shots, but also an opportunity to share a piece of me with you. I can’t promise that I’ll carry it with me EVERYDAY,  but I do resolve to make more of an effort and carry it with me sometimes.

So, in keeping with my New Year’s Resolution….
